You have come to the right place.

Hi. I’m JoJo Phoenix.

I offer trauma-informed somatic coaching and platonic touch therapy

I have been guiding people in trauma-informed embodiment practices for 14 years and have trained over 800 people in how to facilitate trauma-informed movement and meditation grounded in physiology and neuroscience. This experience deeply informs my work.

This is very different from yet complimentary to talk therapy. While a mental health therapist diagnoses and treats without touch, I help you feel more at home and connected to your body through somatic guidance and the offer of consensual, co-regulating shared touch.

This kind of touch and closeness can soothe anxiety, decrease physiological pain, and increase feelings of self-confidence. Likewise, many of my clients find relief from their most painful emotions by processing them while being held or gently touched.

Working with touch also gives you an opportunity to strengthen the ability to voice your boundaries and desires. These skills can be life-changing and useful in all relationships, both platonic and romantic/sexual.

Not sure what your boundaries or desires are? That’s ok: I’m here to help you identify them and am bolstered by my training with Dr. Betty Martin, founder of the Wheel of Consent and my professional certification as platonic touch therapist.

Sexual touch is never included in sessions and physical touch is only incorporated if and when it feels right for you. We do not have to start with or even end up touching. I utilize a variety other somatic-based modalities in my work including nervous system regulation and consent skill building, somatic parts work, and grief processing.

“I came to JoJo Phoenix initially for help with healthy boundaries and self-advocacy. I received that and also learned how to listen to my body and create a deep sense of internal safety and acceptance.

What is a session like?

Each session starts with a check-in, verbalizing our agreements (I will teach you these) and then I guide you in choosing how our session goes. After three sessions, I help you set goals for the duration of our work together.

Our sessions can but do not need to include touch. We work at a pace that suits your nervous system’s needs. Sometimes this means we aim for the session to be about helping you access comfort, nourishment, and ease. Sometimes this means we focus on helping you grow: in which case, I act as an authentic and caring practice partner for you to relate with and get feedback from in realtime. This is where big transformation can happen.

I am a trauma-informed somatic teacher and certified platonic touch therapist and in addition to a wide range of types of consensual touch, I offer nervous system regulation practices, consent skills development, and somatic parts work. Touch can range from holding hands, hugs, gentle massage, and head rubs, to cuddling, and partner dancing. All touch is nonsexual.

Many of my clients also have a deep well of unprocessed grief and choose to participate in private grief rituals with me as part of our work together.

All of my sessions use a consent-first protocol. You can pause, change activities or positions, or end the session at any moment without ever needing to explain nor justify yourself.

Together, we help you translate the experiences you have in our sessions to feel more confident and skillful navigating closeness with your self and with other people in your life.

Why work with me, specifically?

two people's hands touching each other
  1. Experience and knowledge

  2. Healing co-regulation

  3. Nourishing touch

These are my gifts to the world.

Beginning with my time as Program Director of Yoga Behind Bars, I have been guiding people in trauma-informed embodiment practices for 14 years and have trained over 800 people in how to facilitate trauma-informed movement and embodiment spaces grounded in physiology and neuroscience.

I also founded two thriving embodiment communities in Missoula, Ground Swell and Contact Improvisation, that bring people together to play, express, and consensually connect. And, I travel internationally teaching consent-based connection workshops.

Through these practices, my training with Dr. Betty Martin, founder of the School of Consent, and my professional certification with Cuddlist, I have helped hundreds of individuals to become more skillful and comfortable with physical and emotional intimacy and self-expression.

“JoJo Phoenix has a beautiful way of creating space that dissolves walls in the most safe and loving way.
