Contact Improv Classes this fall in Missoula!
with JoJo Phoenix Frank
Are you seeking more playfulness and creativity in your self-expression?
Are you curious about expanding your skillfulness and comfort with being consensually intimate and close with others?
Are you a mover and/or dancer eager to incorporate more improv and partnering in your practice?
All are welcome.
Connect. Listen. Play. Vastly increase your proprioception skills.
If you have been curious about Contact Improvistation (CI), come learn about all the fun and connection it has to offer. If you already have experience, deepen your practice! All active movers welcome.
Classes will begin with a personal warm up, explore one partner skill, and end with a brief bodywork exchange.
Beginners are highly encouraged to attend all four classes and for sure to come to the first class.
Consent is the key that unlocks vast possiblities in this form.
Contact is an intimate form, which is part of its beauty and yet without a strong culture of consent, boundaries can easily be crossed. In these classes, we will center full-body listening and consent in effort to make the intimacy of this practice feel safe and respectful.
And, I can’t promise you won’t meet your edges! In fact, you will and that’s good!
Contact Improv has taught me more than I ever could have imagined how to best listen to my body and hear its needs and boundaries around touch, closeness, and co-regulation. And, a lot of this has come from having experiences where I felt ambivalent or unsure if I was a “yes” or a “no” to what was happening.
Well held contact improvisation classes and containers have provided enough safety for me to try new things and learn about my body and its limits in the process: like a kid venturing out on a new playground who trusts the world and their body enough to play and risk falling. We learn so much from falling when there are enough cues of safety. My background as a trauma-informed trainer and decade of working with incarcerated people with a wide variety of traumas and needs inform the way I center and create cues of safety in this practice.
